NS has more than 21,000 coal cars, including manual hoppers and gondolas for rotary dump service, high cubic capacity coke hoppers, and air-operated quick discharge hoppers. The oldest hoppers and gondolas are rebuilt or replaced, as needed, to maintain a quality fleet.

NS moves coal from mines to domestic and international markets. Some loading facilities are inactive and not listed in the Mine Operations Directory, which will be updated as changes occur.

NS serves transload facilities in Maryland, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, and works with coal operators and selling agents across the nation.
