Diversity is a Norfolk Southern core value, and I am proud to be our company’s chief sponsor and champion of diversity and inclusion. During my military service, I gained a greater appreciation of different cultures and people. I feel very strongly about diversity and inclusion, both as a personal value and as a corporate value. They are keys to our corporate success and to our bottom line.

As a leading transportation service company, Norfolk Southern must recruit the most qualified and talented people to compete in the global marketplace. We strive to create an inclusive workplace where a wide range of perspectives and experiences are valued and respected.  In support of these efforts, the company has formed division and office diversity and inclusion councils across our network, empowering employees as ambassadors of diversity and inclusion.  

In 2018, we expanded our commitment to a culture of inclusion by becoming the first Class I railroad to join CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion, the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance workplace diversity and inclusion. As CEO, I have pledged to encourage constructive conversations on diversity and inclusion, expand unconscious bias training, and share best practices with other companies. Cultivating a more diverse and inclusive company will engage employees, improve performance, and drive growth.
